The Tap Room Gang
Logo Design
When The Tap Room Gang bandleader Sean McCarthy approached me for a logo design, he knew exactly what he wanted. Sean's vision for this music holds a dedication to authenticity and worldbuilding. He insisted that there be a recognizable visual language for his band's logos, and he wanted several iterations and repeatable elements rather than one standard mark. The Tap Room Gang is the second band of its name, the first one belonging to Adrian Rollini in the mid to late 1930s where Rollini played the heavy tones of a bass saxophone. The old band played routinely at a tap room managed by Rollini in a hotel in New York City.
Not so coincidentally, the modern day Tap Room Gang band also got its start with a weekly residency in a tap room, and with Sean playing—you guessed it: a bass saxophone. Sean’s instrument also happens to be EVEN OLDER than the original Tap Room Gang band! The saxophone was obviously a massive part of the namesake and story of the band, and so the main imagery of the logo was a no brainer.
I also had the privilege of creating the artwork and design for the cover of their new album;
